Life & Work with Ebony Robertson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Robertson.

Hi Ebony, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers. 
At a very young age, as early as 15, I found a strong passion for art; my passion for art turned into doing nails. I started noticing that the acrylic paint that I was using to decorate my clients’ nails would get on my good clothes, so instead of throwing my good clothes away one day, I took a paintbrush and some acrylic paint to a pair of jeans, and I drew this beautiful wildflower on the pants, and I said to myself “now that is true art.” Drawing on those pair of pants turned into me drawing on T-shirts, hats, etc… 

The funny thing is people loved what I was doing and would buy my hand-painted art pieces, so I turned my nail salon into a nail salon/boutique with a host of my hand-painted products; that was around the year 2002, throughout the years I kept my passion for painting on clothes, and I started to add patches to my artwork, and that’s when I noticed that I had something special, so I opened up my business called IloveTruart, it’s a fun-filled art place where people can come and have fun by making their own hand-painted merchandise. They get to choose from my various hand-painted designs and hand-paint their own designs right in my art studio themselves. 

When they enter into my art space, it’s filled with art pieces that I have painted, such as acrylic paintings on canvas, my garbage can artwork, patches galore, and so much other fun stuff that makes my customers and myself happy. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been a smooth road. It was very hard to convince people to come and participate in a do-it-yourself workshop, where they feel hesitant that they will probably screw up and do a poor job on their own jackets, but through Marketing and by displaying my art pieces on social media, people feel inspired by my art so much that they trust me to teach them to do what it is that I do. Being able to convince and persuade people to come and do a jacket themselves has really been a tough cookie, but I am overcoming the hurdle. 

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist who specialize in mixed media. I love to do hand painted wild colors on canvas and denim, I also love to add patches to make my artwork pop I love to do hand painting on canvas and denim, I also love to add patches to make my artwork pop with a little bit of bling. 

I think what sets me apart from others is the fact that people can come and enjoy a creative environment, make something really unique by themselves, and also be able to wear their piece of art instead of hanging it on the wall or getting rid of it by putting it in the basement and never using that piece of art again 

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love to be inspired by other artist and art galleries I love to travel the world to see different art. This makes me happy because it inspires me to create and motivates me on so many levels
