Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Hancock.
Hi Daniel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began creating and writing stories as far back as I can remember. I started a theatre troupe when I was 14 and recruited all of my siblings, cousins, and friends to stage my first play. I continued writing and producing my own theatrical productions in the following years, mostly adaptations of biblical stories and classic literature, and my team grew in both talent and the number of participants. By my late teens, we were staging two-act plays as well as touring with original skits, human videos, and live music. This opened the door to several more opportunities for directing, and I also began expanding into filmmaking and multimedia productions. Our team ventured into new territory with “End of Darkness”, a full cast audio drama on the life of Jesus. The production features the talents of 50 voice actors as well as a vivid sound design and original score.
I quit my day job in 2020 and launched into full-time creative work as a producer, director, writer, editor, and consultant. I have since collaborated with veteran Disney directors and animators, DC and Marvel comic book artists, a world-renowned doctor, a best-selling true crime author, and professionals from various industries on many different projects. From novels to animation, comics to true crime, historical biographies, fantasy, and science fiction–there hasn’t been a dull moment!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced is finding support and funding for outside-the-box projects and also finding innovative ways to create professional-level content on an extremely tiny budget. I was a creative working day jobs for many years–writing and producing by moonlight is a tough gig! But I certainly learned how to do a lot with a little, as well as how putting story first will lead to excellence regardless of the budget or medium.
Another challenge over the years is that I have run into an unfortunate level of resistance from people who I hoped would be my greatest advocates. Sometimes, you just have to keep moving forward. Today, I am blessed to be surrounded by sincere and supportive friends.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My experience creating various types of works from the ground up has help me develop a unique and versatile skill set. I have worked as a director, producer, and writer, but I have also personally handled every aspect of the creative process. I’ve produced theatrical plays, audio drama, film projects, comic books, and more. This wide variety of knowledge in multiple areas has given the ability to come alongside other storytellers and productions and help see them through from concept to reality. Any big plans?
I am currently involved in multiple creative projects–my comic book work with Terminus Media, including the next installment in the “Dominion: Fall of the House of Saul” series and the brand-new “Border Wars,” as well as a thrilling graphic novel adaptation of “The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass” entitled “The North Star.” Also coming soon, I’m producing a true crime featurette with author John Leake on Sandra Bridewell, the Black Widow of Highland. Most recently, I joined the production team at Premise Entertainment, a groundbreaking animation studio in Orlando, Florida. I have lived in Michigan for my entire life, so this is quite an adventure!
