Today we’d like to introduce you to DeAngelo Dismukes.
Hi DeAngelo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
So, I started making music around the age of 13, but that was just me playing around and not taking it serious at all. Then, when I got into high school, that’s what made me realize, OK, there are a lot of people doing music; maybe I should start taking it more seriously than what I did when I was growing up. Around the age of 17/18, I started actually writing more and putting down actual lyrics versus trying to freestyle off the top my head and not make sense with what I was doing musically. But with the support over the years of people actually listening and taking the time out of their day to give me feedback, it kept me going!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To be honest, it was never really a smooth road. The obstacles of people hating and not really encouraging it in the city have been a little harder. I’ve gotten hate emails; I’ve gotten hate DMs, and sometimes, it just made me think maybe I wasn’t as good as I thought I was.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So, I am an underground, unsigned artist specializing in making music and providing content for fans all over. I pretty much try to have fun and hope to inspire people to do the exact same thing no matter the age or what they’re going through. I’m pretty much known for music, and that’s about all that I have been known for. To be honest, my most proud moment is when I got contacted by Sprite, and they asked to sign me onto their sprite campaign to be honest, that was one of my like Dopest things that I’ve ever been a part of to actually know that I was doing the right thing with music. In the city of Detroit, there’s typically one sound there’s that Detroit-style rap, and not only do all artists take part in it, but there are a very small percentage of us that do not. And it’s me, I’m pretty much part of that small percentile, and that’s what sets me apart from a lot of artists around here.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
From doing music at a very young age, the industry constantly constantly changes. I’ve seen it go from mumble rap to rap rap. Now, people are going from different cities and using their style of rap and combining it with another style of rap. So, I can see a lot of changes happening with music in the next upcoming 5 to 10 years, maybe even sooner than that.
