Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakeesha Morrison.
Hi Lakeesha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My journey into the world of postpartum doula work began over two decades ago, marking the start of a rewarding and fulfilling career that has defined much of my life. For the past 20 years, I’ve dedicated myself to the care of newborns, transitioning from the moment they arrive home from the hospital to the complexity of sleep training. The fact that I share this business with my identical twin sister makes it even more special. We have been a constant source of support for countless families in our community.
Our roots are planted in Royal Oak, a city that holds not just our current home but also a deep historical connection. As descendants of one of the first black pioneers in Royal Oak, our family’s presence in the area dates back to the late 1850s. It’s a legacy that extends beyond our immediate roles as postpartum doulas, reaching into the historical fabric of the community.
It seems that the calling for motherhood and midwifery has been passed down through generations in my family. I believe I inherited this deep connection from my great, great, great grandmother, who, much like myself, played a vital role in bringing new life into the world. My great-grandmother continued this tradition, assisting in the delivery of many babies during her time on earth. It’s a heritage that I carry with pride and a sense of responsibility.
Beyond my role as a doula, I’ve become a birth/newborn photographer (anything baby is my jam), activist, and local historian in my city, driven by a passion to preserve and celebrate its rich history. Our family holds the distinction of being the longest-living landowners in Royal Oak, adding another layer to our commitment to the community.
In addition to my role as a doula, I’ve embraced in birth and newborn photography 10 years ago, specializing in capturing the essence of these transformative moments. I guess you can say anything baby is my passion!
As I reflect on this incredible journey—from the early days of caring and photographing newborns to becoming a voice for activism and preserving history—I am grateful for the threads that connect my personal history to the broader tapestry of Royal Oak. Each experience, each birth, and every moment of activism has contributed to shaping not only my story but also the story of the city I call home. And as I continue forward, I carry with me the lessons of the past, the joy of new beginnings, and the legacy of my family in Royal Oak.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. One of the constant struggles has been the desire to be available for every mother in their time of need. The reality is, as one person, the demand often surpasses what I can personally fulfill. With the sheer number of babies being born daily, I’ve found myself wishing I could duplicate myself to extend support to each family. The humorous twist to this dilemma is that my identical twin sister, being my only true duplicate, brings a sense of levity to the realization that even having a twin only goes so far in multiplying myself. Despite these challenges, the passion for the work and the commitment to each family remain steadfast.
