Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanette Drake.
Hi Jeanette, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Coming from Alabama to Michigan from college, getting into the industry was a dream far back in my mind. I got into modeling because I always shopped at Teasers boutique, the owner Paulette encouraged me to model for her in a fashion show. The ball began rolling from there. I began working with different photographers to help build my portfolio. I wanted to get better. I was encouraged to try some acting class. It just so happened that Groupon had a free class for the Michigan actor’s studio. From there I took more classes and went on random auditions to help with my nerves. To my surprise, I got a part on a web series called Living it Up. I kept going from there; continuously working on getting better through students’ films, and indie projects that have landed on tubie & prime. I’m steady going. I’ve managed to get signed to some talents agencies as well as a boutique model agency.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely been a rollercoaster. You will develop thick skin in this industry. I’ve been critiqued for my weight auditioning in the mainstream acting world. In the plus-size model world, I’m not big enough. It hasn’t stopped anything though. It’s too many opportunities to quit.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m definitely known to always be working lol. I’m probably mostly known for modeling, and I’ve been transitioning more into acting. I’m not the one to depend on one sector. I’ve been known to work the red-carpet movie premieres in Michigan, interviewing actors for Sdmflix, an independent streaming platform.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Both have played a part in my opportunities. I’ve learned everything happens for a reason, for sure. Even bad luck has led me to some great opportunities.
