Today we’d like to introduce you to William Hausman.
Hi William, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I fell in love with the game of hockey at age 7. Like most kids, I dreamt of one day playing professionally, however, that chance never came to be. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the competition, camaraderie, and freedom the game brought me. I had always been told when one door closes another opens, and although I couldn’t make a living as a professional hockey player, I could still find a way to stay close to the game I loved so much. Ever since I was about 12, my dad had taken me with him to skate with different adult hockey groups; those times were always a blast. It’s no surprise that we both saw this as a great opportunity, a business we could work on together. In 2014 Breakaway Hockey Tournaments was born with the idea to bring back to adult players all the fun they had as a kid. Since then, it’s been a lot of work, a lot of hours, and much trial and error, to get to where we are now. We started with one tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, and have progressed to tournaments across the country.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think it’s ever a smooth road in any business. There’s always risk involved; however, you fight whatever obstacles come your way. You deal with them the best you can because you feel this is what you were born to do. In our business, many struggles revolve around logistics, making sure all the parts of planned events come together at the right time. There is also the impossible to predict – like the ice rink losing power during the tournament or a team not showing up
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I believe my role in our business covers many areas. As owner, I’m responsible for everything. I truly enjoy the creative side of things most, whether it’s designing our website or a new t-shirt or even coming up with new ideas for how to run things at the rink.
I hope we are best known for what I am most proud of, and what sets us apart are all basically the same. We try to provide players with what they want most. We work hard to keep competition within divisions fair. We provide free action photography and video and hopefully all the little extras everyone is looking for. We also are constantly looking to add new things or improve on what we do.
How do you think about luck?
I’m not a big believer in luck. I think hard work and perseverance matter most
