Meet Kayla Pruitt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Pruitt.

Hi Kayla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi! My name is Kayla (aka “Kit”), and I am the sole owner of Kit’s Photography. I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and I now reside in the quiet village of Sanford with my fiancé, Brandon, and my 10-year-old son. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Growing up in poverty stifled my creativity for a great length of time. It was hard to imagine ever becoming a photographer due to the very prohibitive cost of obtaining my first camera. I made due with some cheap disposables at the corner store, and I will admit as a child, I did love walking down to the store and up to the counter, my pockets stuffed with rolls of film, where I’d wait hours to get them developed. But as you can imagine, this lost its shine as time went by. At some point, I resigned myself to the fact that I may never be financially comfortable enough to pursue my dreams, so they took the back burner. 

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am completely self-taught, which has led to a lot of challenges along the way. I have a love for learning new and challenging things, so it really spurred me to dive deep into the world of photography. I’m still learning new things every day. The best part, in my opinion, is that I’m not tied to the idea of “proper” shooting techniques, which allows me to feel limitless in my inspiration. 

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Brandon and I began our journey of experiencing life and love together in December of 2018. He has been my greatest supporter, and I know for certain that I would never have gotten this far without him. Throughout the year of 2021, Brandon saved up what little he had left of his paychecks to give me the most memorable and cherished gift I have ever received. My first ever professional camera, a Fuji X-T100, the one I had been eyeing on eBay for a good 2 years. The feelings that filled me at that moment were beyond the realm of excitement. Not only was I in possession of an actual camera, but I had someone who truly believed in me. Both of these things combined stirred a feeling in me I’m not sure I’ve ever quite experienced. For once in my life, I felt truly motivated. So here I am, pouring that motivation into an internet blog that will hopefully stir up some motivation in someone else, too. I never thought I’d be given the chance to chase that dream, but here I stand before you. Don’t ever give up. If something is meant to be, it will find its way; just look in the places where love shines for you!
