Meet Daquay Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daquay Washington.

Daquay Washington

Hi Daquay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started writing and recording music at age 16, I was inspired by some of my older friends and certain rap artist from the city, which made me want stick with it and start my own label which is N.B.F Nothing But Family. I am transitioning to using solely the name Nbf_quay as it is more reflective of who I am today. Nothing But Family. Before starting my label though I’d just be featured on a lot of different songs with friends and family under the stage name 1800…you can find a lot of my music from them days on YouTube and searching 1800 like Neva Switched Up and more. I did a lot of music with my nephew as well- his stage name is Hustle Barkdale. He actually has a project out right now, it’s too hard…it’s called Top Side so definitely check that out. I did music with a longtime friend and Detroit artist as well Boss Bread. We actually have one of our biggest songs to date, ” Born and Raised in Michigan, ” A Michigan Anthem. That song Born and Raised in Michigan by the way is in the running to be featured in Dame Dash new movie ” The Prince of Detroit ” on the soundtrack. I’m apart of a global music competition and you can click the link provided below to vote. Also make sure you check out Hustle Barksdale and Boss Bread music.

A lot of people was liking our music, so I knew I had to protect it legally, so that’s where forming N.B.F came in…

Under the label, I dropped my first official EP… No Chaser which received critically acclaimed reviews from noted indie platforms and rave reviews for my best song to date “Rap Like This” a melodramatic song not just displaying lyrism but my ability to compose songs.

I wanted to further expand my brand and get people on board with the concept of N.B.F, so I created an apparel line with a 1st phase release of t-shirts toting the label name N.B.F… it’s more coming out for that as well.

I’m following that up with No Chaser II, which will feature the single “Back On,” which is out now.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No. As an independent artist, it’s hard to do things musically/creatively because you are doing everything on your own.

I’m referring to things like studio time to record music, creating visuals for songs, doing all the things to push your music creatively, especially content.

A lot of time, you’re footing the bill, and those these can add up quickly especially depending on how often you create music and how elaborate you want your visuals to be.

So that part has not been easy… like any start up you have to secure funding.

But the things that come to me naturally is easy like writing, music composition/concepts, creating hooks, and networking.

That has got me far, but I know to expand my Brand and fanbase it’s going to take more.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create music… from writing lyrics, hooks, melodies, rap to song composition. It’s important to differentiate the two- writing is the lyrics of a song, the composition is how it’s put together.

I specialize in just THAT… making music. I’ve been called king of hooks, and I’m known to wake a song up with my up tempo beats, adlibs, and unorthodox flow…

I’m proud that I continue to improve in this craft but more importantly of the message I convey through N.B.F… which is Nothing But Family

How do you define success?
Being alive and better than you were yesterday
