Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Milton.
Hi Alexis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Alexis Milton, and I started reading as a way to grieve. I had just lost my aunt, grandmother, and uncle within months of each other who raised me after my mother passed when I was eight. I was never a reader growing up, but I needed a distraction. I first started on YT to see people’s recombinations. I wanted to read black literature because growing up in a predominantly white schools, black authors were non-existed. I was able to find some recs and then went into the bookstore, and my journey of reading started. Once I stated reading, I wanted to track it, so I created a Goodreads page and Instagram. When I got on Instagram. I notice everyone posting the same books by black authors, and that’s when I came up with “unsung blacks,” where I would highlight black books, art, music, movies, etc., that didn’t get the praise as they should. People started engaging more and more, and that’s when I decided to start a YT channel, Lex Reads, and then a blog, unsungblacks.com. I also have a book club, “usnungblack book club,” that stated in February, and just recently, an Etsy shop unsung blacks that sells custom bookmarks that highlights black culture. I love that I can showcase black works because we have done so much to contributed to society, yet many people don’t know. I feel it’s my duty as a black American woman to educated everyone that I can reach about black history.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been very smooth because I do it as an outlet. This has become a hobby where now I have stated to make money, but my intention was to learn myself and, of course, share it with others. I have a perfect balance because I am still working my 9 to 5. I just have to be very organized and wise with my time.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So, my 9 to 5 is in law, and I have been doing that since 2015. I have done everything from auto, bankruptcy, social security, Now I am an office manager at Detroit Metro Title Agency/Detroit Metro Law, where we practice real estate. We are a title agency and a law firm in Farmington, Michigan. Yasir Muhammad and Alex Walling. I have to give a special thanks to them because they are amazing bosses. So, if you every need a to close on a house, hit us up.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Be yourself, don’t compare your journey to others. Be patient, have faith, and believe in yourself. There is no one like you, and you have to think like that on a daily basis. Also, you don’t have to have to have all the fancy products and equipment; use your phone and be yourself period.
