Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Mickens.
Hi Jordyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, as a young girl, I was friendly. Never met a stranger, and always ready to talk if you were ready to listen. My Maternal grandmother started calling me “Daisy.” Like Miss Daisy from the movie “Driving Miss Daisy.” That became the fabric of how I got here, my ability to talk and network. I started a few years post-high school graduation networking with people in Flint, MI, who I knew would be key players. I’d show up to their events, support their clothing lines or merch, telling my friends about them. Everything! I always knew that one day it would turn into something, and Wala! I’ve hosted events in town like “The Art of Hip Hop” and Tia Scott’s “The Dope Show.” I’ve had the opportunity to work with Brandon Corder of BeatsXBeers on various occasions. I had two really great events of my own in 2016 and again in 2017. Spoken on panels in Flint and sat in studio sessions, listening parties, etc. Someone who I admired from day one gave me my first opportunity working for a Black Female owned business, Kyona McGhee. I had the pleasure of doing social media for her law firm Trademark My Stuff. After that, a friend of mine, DJ Hype, helped me make the transition into radio, and I’ve been in this lane ever since June 2021. It elevated last year when I was able to land a career with Cumulus Media’s WDZZ (Z92.7). This station is a HUGE deal in Flint. If you are from here, you would understand what the brand means to the community.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been easy at all. From having a fear of driving for YEARS to losing my best friend in 2015, I’ve seen some dark days. My best friend Symphani and I were the kind of friends that dreamed together. Similar interest and like the perfect mix. What I lacked she had, and vice versa. So that loss left me discouraged for a bit. One thing that hasn’t changed … my faith in God. He seen me through it all and placed some amazing people in my life who have supported me to no end.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently The Afternoon Drive Host for Z92.7 in Flint, MI. You can tune in weekdays from 3 pm-7 pm. Outside of that, I have a podcast titled “Off the Radio with Jordyn Anese.” I’d taken a break from it but plan to be more active with my podcast this Summer. In both spaces, I specialize in telling stories in a unique way that draws an audience. What sets me apart is the fact that in telling a story and I’m authentic to who I am. I can break an event or news down and tell it like I’m in a newsroom or like I’m kicking it with my crew over cocktails. I’m also not afraid to be a student in the room and learn; that’s a game-changer in a world full of know it all’s.
What are your plans for the future?
The biggest plan is to start operating in more of my gifts. Writing, so I’m looking at writing a book soon and getting back into a blogging space. Creating, so using my creativity to build my social media via content. Also, executing events. As a parent, I do have a son; I want to help him develop more at home. I’m going to be more hands-on in that department. I believe that once I start operating in more of my gifts more things will open up for me.
