Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Burston.
Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Robert Burston, and I am a multifaceted creative hailing from the vibrant city of Detroit, MI. My journey in the music industry began as a recording artist, producer and eventually led me to establish my own record label called Plugged Everywhere. Within Plugged Everywhere, I have nurtured the talents of two incredible artists named Mena Mahone and Bullwackie. Beyond music, I have ventured into the world of filmmaking, taking on the roles of executive producer, co-writer, and leading actor in two captivating movies: “Trafficking” and “No Honor Amongst Thieves.” These experiences have allowed me to express my creativity and passion for storytelling in a different medium.
In addition to my accomplishments in music and film, I am also a visionary entrepreneur with two successful clothing lines. The first is called The Bully Boys, which represents a unique blend of style and attitude. The second, Proud Detroiter, was inspired by a life-changing event—my car accident in 2007. During my recovery, the idea for this clothing brand emerged, serving as a testament to the resilient spirit of Detroit. I co-founded Proud Detroiter with my business partners, Jivonna Burney and George Cook, and since then, it has become a symbol of pride for the city.
Plugged Everywhere, my music label was born out of a collaboration with my brother, Jeraun Mills. Together, along with the talented James Jones, we formed a rap group consisting of myself as Bully Boy Fast Lane, Jeraun Mills as Redi Rock, and James Jones as “Boldy James.” From this dynamic partnership, the foundation of Plugged Everywhere was laid, propelling us to new heights and opportunities in the industry.
Overall, my story is one of artistic versatility, entrepreneurial spirit, and a deep connection to my roots. I believe in the power of creative expression to transcend boundaries and inspire others, and it is through my music, films, and fashion endeavors that I strive to make a lasting impact on both the entertainment world and the community that has shaped me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While my journey has been filled with rewarding experiences and notable achievements, it wouldn’t be entirely accurate to describe it as a smooth ride. Like any path worth pursuing, there have been challenges and obstacles along the way that have tested my resilience and determination. Starting a record label, managing artists, and navigating the competitive music industry is a complex undertaking. It requires a combination of creativity, business acumen, and a deep understanding of the ever-evolving industry landscape. Building Plugged Everywhere from the ground up was not without its hurdles, but through dedication and a strong belief in my vision, I was able to overcome obstacles and carve out a space for my artists and myself.
Similarly, delving into the world of filmmaking brought its own set of challenges. Executive producing, co-writing, and acting in movies demanded extensive collaboration, creative problem-solving, and a relentless commitment to delivering high-quality storytelling. It required balancing multiple roles and responsibilities, pushing the boundaries of my capabilities, and adapting to unforeseen circumstances throughout the production process.
The entrepreneurial journey of establishing clothing brands was also met with its share of trials. From conceptualization to manufacturing, marketing, and building a loyal customer base, there were moments of uncertainty and setbacks. However, I approached these challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, constantly refining my strategies and persevering to create distinctive and successful brands.
In essence, while my journey may not have been without its fair share of bumps in the road, each challenge has been instrumental in shaping me as an artist, entrepreneur, and individual. The obstacles I’ve encountered have only fueled my drive and determination to succeed, and I believe they have ultimately contributed to my growth and success.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My journey in music has been deeply influenced by iconic figures such as J Dilla and Battin, and my childhood friendship with them has shaped my musical path from an early age. Drawing from their expertise and my own innate talent, I have developed a unique ear for music and honed my skills as a songwriter.
Currently, I am fortunate to be collaborating with my family and touring alongside the legendary Boldy James, allowing me to share my music with audiences far and wide. This collaboration not only showcases my individual talents but also demonstrates the power of collective creativity and the bonds that music can forge.
In the realm of filmmaking, me and my partner Carlos Payne and Byron Lacey took a leap of faith and decided to venture into the world of movies. The success we’ve achieved is a testament to our vision and storytelling ability. One of my movies, “Trafficking,” has garnered impressive viewership, nearing a million views solely through YouTube marketing. This accomplishment highlights the resonance of my storytelling and the ability to captivate audiences with your cinematic creations.
My clothing lines have also been a source of great fortune. Both The Bully Boys and Proud Detroiter have gained recognition and have been embraced by celebrities from around the world. The fact that Proud Detroiter has made its way to being sold in the Metro Detroit Airport speaks to its appeal and the pride it instills in the local community.
Overall, my artistic endeavors in music, movies, and fashion have been marked by influential collaborations, remarkable achievements, and a deep connection to my roots. My music carries the influence of the legends who inspired me, my movies captivate audiences, and my clothing lines have found success both within the industry and among renowned figures. My creative works reflect not only my talent but also my ability to connect with people and leave a lasting impression.
