Conversations with Dr. Brian Fiani

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Brian Fiani.

Hi Dr. Fiani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I always had the ambition to make an impact. To me, health was the most admirable way to impact others. I want to help as many people as I can during this lifetime and in the most drastic of ways. Neurosurgery is the specialty of medicine that helps people with the most critical aspects of their lives during the most trying times. My life has been dedicated to Neurosurgery with the goal of being the most recognizable face and voice in the field.

My journey started right here in Michigan, where I am from originally. I graduated from Detroit Country Day School with Summa Cum Laude honors and proceeded to graduate from the University of Michigan with University Honors one year early. At age 20, I started medical school at Michigan State University, graduating as the youngest graduate in medical school history. My neurosurgery residency training was completed at Desert Regional Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident, and was elected President of the hospital’s resident population by my peers. I received the prestigious Resident Achievement Award presented to the best graduating osteopathic resident of any surgical specialty in the nation based upon one’s residency career. I then continued my training with a sub-specialty fellowship in minimally invasive spine surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center, featuring full medical staff privileges at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and appointments with the Cornell Medical College as instructor of neurological surgery and assistant attending neurosurgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Department of Neurological Surgery.

Now, I bring my education and training back to Michigan, where it all began. I have brought world-class spine surgery to the neighborhood spine centers here in Michigan. Prestige and availability an amazing combination.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am grateful to my colleagues at Mendelson Kornblum Orthopedics and Spine Specialists for their tremendous support and making it a smooth road as I bring my talents and training from my years in Los Angeles and New York City. I have been from one side of the country to the other, and now I am back. I went wherever the training was the best in order to make me the best…and that is exactly what I did. We are doing amazing things for the patients with neck pain, back pain, spinal injuries, and degenerative problems here in Michigan. We have only just begun to see what our potential has in store for us. The sky is the limit. The organization has been able to match my level of energy and enthusiasm, which makes for a great partnership.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a BOARD-CERTIFIED NEUROSURGEON and completed an Ivy-League Fellowship at the world’s #1 ranked neurosurgery hospital in the word. As a Neurosurgeon, I perform brain and spine surgery. My sub-specialization, combined with my advanced level of training sets me apart as a minimally invasive spine surgeon. I am known for “small incisions, big results,” meaning my surgical techniques are proven to provide patients pain relief with little or no downtime. Minimally invasive techniques minimize tissue dissection, making the recovery process from surgery seamless, effortless, and can even be accomplished at ambulatory surgery centers. My patients love the fact that they can return to work immediately. Imagine not needing pain medications. Imagine being back on the golf course in only a matter of a few weeks.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
The lakes here in Michigan are very special. I spent most of my childhood summers on our boats, tubing, and waterskiing with my brother and parents. Those lake memories are my favorite childhood memories.
