Today we’d like to introduce you to David Kim.
Hi David, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I always had an interest in the arts, and when I was in high school, I decided to go to art school. I attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and focused in ceramics. I took a few visual communications and object design classes but focused on ceramics as my medium. During college and after college, I worked with in production pottery and tile making as well as an artist assistant. I eventually set up my own practice and ended up working with many restaurants in Chicago to create unique dinnerware. I became more freelance and worked with hotels, interior designers, ad companies as well as making my own ceramics.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As an artist trying to make it a business, there is no manual on “how to” be an artist, and I believe I really learned as I go. My practice is unique to myself, and the only way to move forward is to learn from my mistakes and to not give up.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a ceramics artist and potter. I really enjoy making functional dinnerware for home use and special objects that can be a part of people’s everyday life. I also create many different type of ceramic objects from tiles, dinnerware, and just sculptural objects. I really enjoy the process of figuring out how to make the objects and creatively transferring the ideas I learned to other projects that I do. I also learned from a master potter in Korea to creatively further my own practice.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My mother and father were always supportive of my art path. They never quit on me and understood the difficulties of being an artist, but they always had faith. It was tremendous in my growth.
