Rising Stars: Meet Collin Bertch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Collin Bertch.

Hi Collin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, Taxi was always searching for ways to compete and create. After finding hip-hop during grade school, he fell in love with the story-telling and emotional aspect of rap. Dealing with struggles of his own, Taxi Cab found comfort in creating his own music, using it as a way to express the feelings that otherwise wouldn’t surface.

Taxi Cab has showcased his musical capabilities on singles such as “Feeling So Low” and his standout project, “Two Toned Taxi.” Riding the momentum of the latter project, Taxi Cab released “Taxi’s World” in the early months of 2022, which has garnered over 200k streams on Spotify.

As of recently, Taxi Cab has been working with local collective Caged Lotus to help create an outlet for creatives to express and share their art. He has played a key role in organizing community events and motivating other creatives. After performing at 10 unique venues last year, including the 2022 Sounds Of the Zoo Festival, Taxi is looking to leave his mark on the Kalamazoo music scene.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If you’re not experiencing bumps in the road, you’re not trying hard enough. I think part of the beauty of being an artist is overcoming moments of self-doubt and hardship and turning it into something breathtaking.

One of the biggest adversities that I’ve faced throughout my life is keeping my head on straight. There’s so many distractions in life that it’s easy to lose track of what’s important, especially when you’re dealing with internal conflict. The most important thing to do when shooting for a large, long-term goal is to never lose faith, always believe in yourself, and make sure your circle is filled with people who will uplift and advance your dreams, not hinder them.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Taxi Cab is an Underground Hip-hop artist located in Kalamazoo, MI. Locally, he is best known for his unique cadence, distinguishing voice, and intriguing lyricism. Growing up playing saxophone, Taxi’s instrumentals are strongly influenced by jazz, as well as artists such as J. Cole, Earl Sweatshirt, and Kendrick Lamar.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I think success is extremely subjective. Each person will give a different response to what they define as success. My definition, however, is waking up every day with people who love you, being able to support those loved ones, and the obvious, not having to worry about financial hardship.
