Today we’d like to introduce you to Signy Klein.
Hi Signy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am originally from Canada. I started my career in Marketing working for a Packaged Goods company and then transitioned to the Entertainment field. After the birth of our first child, I suffered from Postpartum. It was a very difficult time, and I carried shame. I was embarrassed and felt guilty that motherhood wasn’t what I had imagined. I missed my old life. Luckily, I was able to get professional support and found pleasure in being Dexter’s mom. Two years later, I gave birth to our daughter, Gabi. My experience was very different as I felt more confident and at peace being a mom of two. A year later, my husband was transferred to Dallas. It was quite a change from Toronto.
I spent our first five years in Dallas as a stay-at-home mom. I was quite busy looking after our kids along with volunteering. I was also busy taking Dexter for outside therapy as he was diagnosed with Autism.
During those years, I felt like something was missing. I wanted something that gave me joy, passion and not kid related. I missed having a reason to get dressed in the morning, meeting new people, and sharing my creative talents.
A girlfriend suggested I consider becoming a Wardrobe Stylist with J.Hilburn, the world’s largest custom lifestyle menswear brand. Immediately, I thought it sounded fun, loved that it offered me great flexibility (being available to our school-aged children), plus an opportunity for me to start contributing financially to my family.
What I didn’t expect was the benefits of belonging to a community of fellow J.Hilburn Stylists. They say you can choose your friends, not your family. I feel lucky to be part of the J.Hilburn family. Our corporate office trains and supports us while stylists across the country provide inspiration and comradery. There is commitment and passion for the brand.
J.Hilburn’s purpose: “We provide an effortless, personalized experience for sustainable custom-made clothing that gives men confidence and makes them look and feel great.”
I love that we sell confidence through custom-fit clothing. This job allows me to marry my creative side along with my desire to help others. I create wardrobes that are versatile and interchangeable, one that fits their body, personality, budget, and lifestyle.
Here’s feedback from a few of my clients:
“Sig is a joy to work with and cares about all the details. She is passionate about her career, and it shows in her amazing service. Sig helps me look sharp!”
“I enjoy working with Signy; the individual attention and care she provides with all my shopping decisions. I wear the clothing daily and love the custom fit.”
“Signy is a pro. She’s thoughtful, experienced, and knows her product. She’s diligent but not pushy. Most importantly, I trust her to know what looks good on me!”
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has had some bumps on the road; three moves, having a child with special needs, and a husband who travels regularly.
After being a stylist in the Dallas area for 5 years, my husband was relocated to Westchester County, NY. I worked on building my clientele in the Tri-State area along with mentoring other Stylists. In the Summer of 2019, we moved to Michigan to follow up husband and his career.
J.Hilburn offers a virtual platform, so I am able to successfully assist my clients in various markets and create a wardrobe that’s unique to them and their needs. We continue to expand our proprietary technology tools: a Virtual Measuring App, and a digital garment configurator to name a few.
I love working one-on-one with my clients, making them feel great in clothes that fit, and building lasting relationships. I am not a top seller at J.Hilburn however, I am managing my business and setting my own goals – that feels powerful to me. Building my business on my terms is empowering.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
J.Hilburn is the largest custom lifestyle menswear brand with a fully independent sales force that is revolutionizing the way men shop & the Custom Menswear Industry and owns NO inventory. Custom menswear has grown 5.8% year over year.
There are other brands that have disrupted the marketplace and changed the way we travel, commute, and view entertainment. Airbnb revolutionized the Hotel Industry and owns NO real estate. Uber revolutionized the Taxi/RideShare Industry and owns NO Taxis. Netflix is the world’s largest movie house and owns NO cinemas.
Today the workforce is not looking to only do one thing with one company. Diversification is key, and we see that J.Hilburn is a natural fit for many in the workplace and strives for multiple streams of income. You DO NOT need to do this full-time. It’s more common in today’s market to have a side hustle than to not have multiple income streams.
This opportunity attracts people from a variety of different professional backgrounds (Lawyers, Nurses, Teachers, Accountants, and some with Fashion or Menswear backgrounds); mostly women, but the men who are JH Stylists have been quite successful as they are “walking billboards.”
Some people want extra fun money, some people want a reason to get dressed up and not talk about their kids for a few hours, some people are going through a life change like a divorce or a move, or are recent empty nesters. They love the flexibility and the experience of being an entrepreneur.
Our core values are focused on respect for our clients and the earth. We take pride in bringing you the world’s most prestigious fabrics and the expertise of our specialized manufacturing partners. We leverage time-honored craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology to deliver custom-made clothing with exceptional construction, fit, and quality. We believe in fair labor standards and reducing our environmental footprint as we produce quality products. And lastly, we work hard to provide the highest level of service.
I am looking for like-minded people who might be interested in styling and/or starting their own business. I enjoy mentoring people who enjoy fashion, like helping others, and want to have a joyful life. It has been wonderful to set my own path, pace, and goals. Each stylist has the opportunity to create their vision for their business. In 2018, I received the Top Mentor Award at J.Hilburn. I am there to support, encourage and cheer on new stylists.
Join the J.Hilburn team as we crack the code of retail selling in the modern age.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We settled in Birmingham, Mi, six months before the pandemic. It’s been taking me longer to build my clientele and share my services.
On March 15, 2020, when my clients started working from home, they lost the desire to put on an outfit or even look presentable. Some started wearing their oldest (and/or dirtiest) basketball shorts and T-shirts.
They somehow moved seamlessly between lying in bed and sitting at your home office.
Luckily J.Hilburn had a casual sportswear line and started to expand the collection, like softer fabrics for casual pants and hoodies. I was able to create style boards that showed pieces that were comfortable and presentable. I shared with them how wearing one of these looks would make them more productive, thoughtful, and ready for their daily challenges.
Many men do not like shopping for clothes; however, they understand the importance of their brand image. My clients realize they need some assistance with their virtual work-from-home look. I told them, “It does matter how you look and feel when you are participating in video calls. You need to own your square”.
