Today we’d like to introduce you to D’Lana Starkey.
Hi D’Lana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Okay, so my art of creating natural hair care products started when I did a “big chop” February of 2018. I literally went in the mirror and grabbed a regular pair of scissors I had in my apartment – they weren’t even professional hair scissors lol. I was so tired of my hair and the unhealthy state it was in at the time. So, I decided to cut it all off to about 3-4 inches. After I cut my hair, I started doing at-home DIY hair experiments posting them to my YouTube channel and social media pages. My followers would always ask questions and encouraged me to make personals for them. So, during this time, I discovered honey – I put raw organic honey in my hair, and I fell in love. Honey left my hair so moisturized and soft. I was amazed, from there on out, I started experimenting and then I came up with my number one seller today – Honey Whip deep conditioner. Honey Whip contains raw organic honey, and it was the first product I created and sold e-commerce.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
HAS THE ROAD BEEN SMOOTH? *sighs* I wish that I could say it has been, but no. The road has been difficult yet an ongoing learning experience. And honestly, although it’s been tough, I’m grateful for the hardships and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. Actually, I’m STILL learning, I like to consider myself to be a student of life. I’m forever learning, enduring, and growing all at once. Being a business owner, you never stop learning, and that’s the beauty in it. Because although I’ve failed at many things within my business, those same things are what I learn from. So, I like to keep the trajectory on the positive side of things, doing so allows me to embrace this journey.
We’ve been impressed with LANA ORGANIX, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lana Organix is a natural hair care line that consists of 4 products – a deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner, hair growth butter, and a hair growth oil. All of my products are organic, cruelty-free, and safe for children. The conditioners contain raw organic honey sourced from Detroit Hives. Detroit Hives is a nonprofit organization that cultivates vacant lots into friendly pollinator spaces. I chose to source my honey from their organization because I know it’s the most fresh and organic honey that I can use to add that richness and creaminess to my conditioners as honey acts as a natural humectant for hair.
However, I aim to educate herbal and holistic healing through healthy hair care. Opposed to focusing solely on how to maintain healthy hair topically, I educate on how to maintain healthy hair from the inside out. When my customers come to me with questions about their dry scalp, excessive shedding, or any problematic hair issues, my first question is always, “What is your diet like?”. If an individual is experiencing a scalp issue, then there may be an underlying gut issue. The imbalance in the gut may be the cause for a flaky scalp. I want women to know that no matter how deep we condition, shampoo, and treat our hair – it all starts from within.
With my platform, I advocate for a healthy lifestyle – from meditating, working out, and consuming a well-balanced diet. Implementing all of these things into our daily life can help to alleviate stress and maintain a healthy scalp, thus maintaining healthy hair.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the culture and the summertime vibe Detroit has. There’s no place on Earth like Detroit. From the food, the fashion, the buildings, and our Downtown. I’ve been many places, and Detroit’s culture still has me in a chokehold. As far as dislikes, I hate the harsh winters and cold weather other than that Detroit is home.
