Daily Inspiration: Meet Carter Louisell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carter Louisell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began making short films with my sibling when I was young. We would make movie trailers in iMovie, and it was so much fun. I really didn’t get back into film until my freshman year in high school when I took a media communications class with Mr. Howard. This class opened the door to filmmaking. From there, I was hooked. I took three more years of broadcasting and branched out to create personal films. For my school, I created high-quality sports films and my senior year a senior video along with my classmates Ethan and Caden. During my high school career, I had the amazing opportunity to connect with a production company in Grand Rapids called Taproot Pictures. At this company is where I learned everything I know now. They gave me the opportunities to be on commercial sets and learn the ins and outs of the film industry. I owe my success to the kindness and trust of Karl Koelling and Josh Carrasquillo. I have worked as an intern for them for three summers now, and I’ve loved all of it. Going into my freshman year of college, I knew I wanted to continue to work in the film world, and I knew the best way would to be get connected with Spartan Vision here at MSU. I spent my freshman year filming a variety of sports, such as hockey, volleyball, and tennis. However, I always dreamed of shooting basketball. Coming into my sophomore year, I wanted to make that goal come true. And amazingly it did! I was lucky enough to get into contact with Julian Stall and Cara Kaye, who are the two creatives in the MSU Basketball office. This year I’ve loved every minute of working with them and the MSU team. I still continue freelance work and plan to return to Taproot this summer. In the near future, I plan to move out to LA and pursue a summer internship to further my interest in the film industry. The overarching goal is to become a DP and shoot commercials, short films, and feature films.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, it’s been an ever-changing road of opportunities and experiences. I have had the good fortune of getting connected with the right people at the right time. This is what allowed me to work with Taproot, Spartan Vision, and Michigan State Basketball.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work mainly as a camera operator. My niche has been sports videography and making documentary-style films. I am most proud of working as an AC for a commercial shoot and additionally working with the MSU Basketball team. I set myself apart with my determination, creativity, and levelheaded thinking.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The biggest thing I learned was not to take for granted the things we enjoy day to day and the people we meet.
