Meet Becky Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Martin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I received my first camera as a Christmas gift from my husband 11 years ago! I had always had an interest in photography, but once that camera was in my hand it really lit a fire in my heart to learn as much as I could about it.

I started taking photos of my son who was 6 months at the time, I practiced on my family, nieces, and nephews…I took every opportunity offered to me from anyone who would let me practice!

Once strangers started wanting to “book a session” with me, I knew I needed to get more serious about learning how to edit, composition, the use of light, etc… that’s when I dove in with two feet and really poured my heart and soul into learning. That desire to be the best for my clients is still very much alive today!

I learned quickly that making money doing what I loved was nice, but it wasn’t what motivated me to learn or create. It was the relationships of those that gave me the privilege of capturing these precious, intimate moments in their lives, the ones that text me to give the extra “thank you” for the photos I captured that really made me want to work hard to stand out.

In this industry you have wedding photographers, newborn photographers, pet photographers, etc… I can’t hone in one genre of photography. I sincerely enjoy it ALL, but I started to notice a trend in what pulled at my heartstrings during each session, and that is the way a mother is with her family.

I personally love being a mother; I remember dreaming many, many times growing up about holding and raising my own babies someday! I now have 5 kids, and the Motherhood journey is the most beautiful part of my life! It is what I’m most proud of.

Fast forward to this past year and I rebranded my company as a Motherhood Fine Art Photographer! I decided that while I love all types of sessions, it is particularly the ones that involve mothers that really make me want to work hard…whether they are grandmothers, mothers, or dog mothers, I think the love a woman gives to those in her care is SO powerful and should be documented!

Many times, Mothers pour their heart and soul into their homes and children but put themselves on the back burner when it comes to capturing tangible images/ memories of themselves with their children…I want to change that.

I want to be known as a mother, a photographer, a friend that poured into other mothers. The one that gave you images that brought you to tears when your babies are not babies anymore. The one that pushes you to get in front of the camera because just as fast as the shutter snaps, so is the journey of Motherhood.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has definitely been quite smooth. I have a wonderful support system of my husband, friends, and family! They all really pour encouragement and love into my life and also give me honest feedback which only makes me better all around!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Motherhood Fine Art Photographer! I specialize in making mothers feel beautiful while capturing authentic, genuine, and creative portraits of you with your children.

I am known for colorful, emotive, classy, and elegant heirloom portraits! I have worked hard to stand out in West Michigan and truly believe that I do! Many times, my admirers say, “How do you do that?! It looks like a painting!”
Not only are my photos very different from those around me, but the beautiful relationships that I work hard to build with every mother that gives me the great honor of photographing them helps set me apart in my field. I am consistently trying to find a ways to give back to my clients and show them that I genuinely care for them!

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is sharing many laughs and making music with my family!
