Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Mitchell.
Robert, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story started when I was four years old and was given the chance to direct the adult choir. I got the chance because I asked why the choir always sing certain songs the same way every time they sing them. The director said little boy if you think you can do better come to choir rehearsal on Thursday. I went to rehearsal but, I was very scared once I saw all the adults singing. Then I remembered seeing Dr. Lucille Lemon directing the Lemon Gospel Chorus and I felt my help coming. They put a box for me to stand on to direct the choir. I begin to direct it as I felt it and had them hold notes and cutoff some notes as I saw fit. At The Cross went over well and I’ve been directing ever since that Thursday night.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been easy or smooth sailing. I’ve come across people that weren’t easy to work with or willing to teach. I’ve learned to let God lead, and He’ll make all things line up. God will send you what you need.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When I was in the 9th grade I met Loren Harper who talked me into joining the Jazz Ensemble, Gospel Choir and Drama Department. My feet didn’t work well with the dance routines therefore I decided to focus on the Gospel Choir and Acting which lead me to writing inspirational stage plays such as I’ve Been Through 2 Much Already, Will U B Left At The Gate?, Pay 2 Stay: The Trial of Joseph and Mary, Delayed Not Denied, Friends With True Benefits and I Thought I Knew You. I’ve Been Through 2 Much Already played for 10 years before becoming my first movie/film. Since then I Made It was produced. April 28, 2023 my new film The Split will premiere at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center 15801 Michigan Avenue * Dearborn, MI 48126. Mitchell’s Dream Team also has 3 short films: Who Da Daddy?, Young Tender and Make Me A Believer that are coming out Summer 2023. Mitchell’s Dream Team consists of myself(Robert Mitchell III) Jason Sims and Deborah Bryant. God put this team together.

I’m apart of an upcoming Live Recording with Marcell West and the Detroit Gospel Journey Choir June 10, 2023 at Greater Grace Temple.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Find someone that’s do what you want to do and ask can you shadow them and or assist them.
What has worked for me is to start at the bottom and learn everything from those I look up to in the industry.
