Today we’d like to introduce you to Delaney Mott.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my photography business in 2018 when I was still in high school. I wasn’t sure at the time what I had planned for myself, but I knew this is what I wanted to do and was most passionate about. I didn’t have many paid shoots at first, but I loved photographing my friends and family to gain experience and capture precious moments in my life. Once I started going to college for photography, I learned a lot more technique and was able to gain clients, all of which gave me confidence in my passion. As a second-semester senior graduating from Kendall College of Art and Design, I’ve spent a good amount of time reflecting and preparing for a post-grad life where I can continue my passion. I will definitely continue my freelance business, DelaneyElizabethPhotography, but I know that I want a job in fashion photography in Chicago, where I’m moving after graduating. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me and my business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! I had quite the journey throughout college. After graduating high school, my goal was to attend art school in Chicago, SAIC in particular, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to afford it. So, I started out at a university in Michigan majoring in photography instead but quickly realized within the first semester that it wasn’t the school for me. I knew then that I needed to attend an art school to fit my needs and wants, but I wasn’t sure where to go. I attempted to go to my dream school yet again, but could still not afford it. During this time and during the pandemic, I had moved back home and was working and doing online school to obtain my associates of arts degree, which I received in December 2020. I contemplated whether it would be worth it or not to finish my bachelor’s degree because of the cost and stress of college. But I ended up deciding to attend Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids Michigan, for my last two years of college. This is my fifth and last semester at KCAD, and I have loved every minute of it! I’m so grateful I ended up here and have learned more and grown more than I ever thought I would. I’ve made amazing friends and have amazing mentors. The perfect plan I had for my four years of college did not go as planned, but it ended up a lot better than I ever expected despite the challenges I faced!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about DelaneyElizabethPhotography?
I started DelaneyElizabethPhotography in 2018 with not much intention besides sharing photos of family and friends and exploring my passion for photography. Now in early 2023, I have gained clients, experience, and even more passion for what I do in my business. I specialize in portrait and fashion photography, but I really enjoy all facets of photography. I am a huge people person, so working with and getting to know others is one of my favorite things about what I do. I’ve been able to capture and be a part of many amazing experiences in people’s journeys through life. I’m very proud that I started out with a passion, and have created a business on my own that highlights that passion and allows me to do what I love for a living, and I can only hope that continues even further once I graduate! I would love readers to know that I also have a podcast called MottWears available on all streaming platforms that explores my passions for fashion, lifestyle, photography, and more.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I’m the type of person who can’t choose just one favorite! But I’d have to say one memory that comes to mind is dancing in my childhood living room, on our area rug, to the old-school music my dad listened to on the tv with my siblings. I’m a triplet and growing up with my best friends was definitely my favorite part of childhood and still holds true today. I’m very thankful to have the family that I do.
