Rising Stars: Meet Erin Wasik

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Wasik.

Hi Erin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I didn’t dream of being a real estate agent when I was a little girl. In fact, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to become a real estate agent when I began taking the pre-license courses. But I knew that if I wanted to thrive in the Upper Peninsula, I needed to make a radical change to my life.

My husband is a numbers guy. He had just closed on a commercial property in Marquette, one of several investments he made that year. I was working as a line cook at a local restaurant. He showed me a number on his calculator and said “That’s the amount of money our real estate agent made from representing us this year. That could be you.” After many discussions about both of our plans and goals for the future, I agreed that getting a real estate license had the potential to be a good career choice for me and an overall benefit to our family. I signed up for class.

Shortly after getting licensed and gaining some experience, it became clear that this career was a great fit for me. Realtors are required to adapt, learn, and problem-solve constantly. Our work days have a lot of variety and we get to connect with all kinds of different people. It may be cheesy to say, but truly, helping someone accomplish their goal of buying a home or an investment is extremely rewarding.

I’m now 4 years into my career and have exceeded the goals that I initially set for myself in 2019. I’m more connected to Marquette than ever and my success allows me to support a variety of local programs and causes including youth sports, education, blood/platelet donation, college student mentoring, and more. It means everything to me that I’m able to give back to the place that has given me so much.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Something I struggled with early in my career was dealing with the negative perceptions that some people have of real estate agents. I once had a man I just met ask me what I do for a living. When I told him I’m a realtor his response to me was “All real estate agents should be put on a boat in the middle of Lake Superior and blown up.” So that didn’t feel the best.

That discomfort required me to work through some of the self-limiting aspects of my ego which has helped me in both my professional and personal life. I’ve committed to running my business in a way that aligns with my values and allows me to feel proud of what I do.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Being a realtor in a small town requires me to be a bit of a jack of all trades. I list and sell both residential and commercial real estate, provide commercial property management services, and work with property investors. Only a small percentage of realtors in my market work in commercial.

One core value of my real estate team is “A commitment to above and beyond service.” Our goal is not to meet expectations, but to exceed them every opportunity that we get. We are committed to treating each customer, regardless of budget, in a way that leaves them feeling valued and taken care of.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Laughing. Laughing makes me so happy. Sharing a laugh with someone whether we are close or complete strangers is a source of absolute pure joy in my life. My favorite is when it completely gets away from you and your both just doubled over with tears streaming down your face.
