Meet Shayna Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayna Phillips.

Shayna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up looking through Vogue and Harpers Bazaar magazines loving editorial photos, that is where my love affair with photography started. The first camera I used was my mom’s Kodak ektralite 10 with 110 film. This camera captured my life through middle school and high school. My friends were often my subjects. I then moved on to point-and-shoot digital cameras to sneak into concerts, shhh don’t tell anyone. I finally upgraded in 2015 to a DSLR before taking a trip to SLC. I knew with that landscape; I needed a really good camera and to be taken seriously as a Photographer. When I came back from SLC my dear friend asked me to be a second shooter for a wedding. I asked her if she was serious and I wasn’t quite sure if I was ready to capture such a special moment. That first wedding felt like I had been photographing for years. Without her, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The wedding photography industry is very competitive and yes, it is hard. You have to find ways to stand out and build your brand, I’ve had ups and downs but I continue to study photography to improve my craft.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer that specializes in weddings. I love capturing those special moments that clients can look back on and cherish. I am most proud of not giving up in this crazy competitive business. There were times when I thought about hanging it up and I wasn’t good enough. I am so glad I did not! I love to make my clients laugh and feel stress-free on their big day. I have met amazing couples over the years that I have become friends with.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My personality, I am known as the funny girl and movie quoter. Able to connect with any personality type. Breaking down walls and bringing out that person’s personality in photographs. Being able to connect with parents is also rewarding. Adapting to changing scenarios and keeping communication open. I treat my clients as if they are a part of my team, I want them to love every minute and photograph.
