Daily Inspiration: Meet Theresa Hansen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Hansen.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Baking started at a young age for me, growing up I was always in the kitchen with my mom and grandma. My grandma was a home baker and my mom worked in the local grocery store bakery. We volunteered for 5+ years baking goods for fundraisers that benefited the Special Olympics in the Lansing area. Due to my husband’s career, we moved to Virginia for 17 years and sadly my baking slowed. After semi-retiring my husband and I moved to Wolverine in the summer of 2019, and I found myself with more time on my hands. Shortly after getting settled, I started making birthday cupcakes for my husband’s employer. After several birthdays I started to get tired of making cupcakes and decided to try my hand at gourmet cookies. I have always loved decorating cookies since our Special Olympic fundraisers, but I wanted to make them more elaborate. So, I found myself watching a lot of YouTube tutorials and self-learning different techniques…

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest hurdle was being new the area and getting my name out there. Like I said, I started doing cupcakes and cookies for my husband’s employer and quickly started getting orders from his co-workers for holidays and family birthdays. It took some time to get my name/business to spread within the community.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a home baker working under the Michigan Cottage Laws. I specialize in gourmet decorated cookies but also make other sweet treats such as toffee Chex-mix, caramel corn, and cupcakes. I am best known for my decorated sugar cookies.

I am proud of how many satisfied and repeat clients I have made over the course of two years.

My attention to detail and perfected sugar cookie recipe sets me apart from my competitors.

What does success mean to you?
My definition of success is repeat customers. People will not come back to you if they aren’t satisfied.
