Daily Inspiration: Meet Kevin Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Thomas.

Hi Kevin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We are a family farm that has been gardening and growing for 15 years. We were able to turn our love for gardening into a rapidly growing business, from craft shows to selling our seeds and products on our website, Etsy, and locally at farmer’s markets. The actual business started in 2016. We take pride in being known as the “Pepper People.” Our farm is in Ionia County, Michigan on 11 acres of great farmland. We currently have all organically grown vegetables, dried peppers and herb spices, pepper, tomato, and other seeds, and many types of indoor house plants. We take great pride in producing good quality products and hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have had a relatively smooth and fast road. Our business really took off when Covid struck. That’s when our online seed store became the main focus of the business. Currently, our challenges are the rapid growth of the business. We have had to adjust our thinking and try to stay ahead of the growth by maximizing our produce-growing area and streamline areas of the business just to stay on top of the growth.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Our primary focus is currently peppers and tomatoes. We grow over 45 varieties of tomatoes and 100 varieties of peppers. We sell the product fresh, dried, and also pull the seeds and sell those. We also use our dried peppers and herbs to make a variety of seasoning blends. We believe that customer service should be the main focus in creating a successful business. Customer service is an art that so many of the online and big box stores have forgotten about. We are bringing that back by educating the customers and helping them along the way.

What are your plans for the future?
We are looking forward to building our greenhouse to allow us to grow throughout the year and to use as a storefront. We also want to build high-wall hoop houses to extend our growing season.
