Inspiring Conversations with Joseph Lalonde of JMLallonde.com

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Lalonde.

Joseph, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to becoming an award-winning leadership blogger and author started 20 years ago when I watched bad leadership happen in the workplace. The attitudes and actions of leaders rubbed me the wrong way. I didn’t know why but it did. Eventually, I stumbled into a bookstore and began to read about leadership, the right things leaders do, and how to do the right thing. It hit me then and there that this was the reason the actions I saw bothered me so much; I was seeing bad leadership. However, in these books, a lot of authors spoke poorly about movies and entertainment. I bought it hook, line, and sinker. I gave up music, television, and movies. I wanted to be successful. And those things just wouldn’t cut it.

I eventually discovered Chip and Dan Heath’s book Made To Stick. In their book, the Heath brothers shared how stories stick and stats don’t. It was here that I realized what I was missing. Movies are stories. They transport us to lands we can never step into, but we can experience.

The stories screenwriters tell have a purpose. There are lessons hidden in the movies. They’re not junk food for the mind. Movies are treasure troves of growth potential.

This is how the book Reel Leadership came to be and why I regularly share lessons from movies on my blog, jmlalonde.com.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, not at all. I’ve struggled to grow my audience and find the perfect niche of people who want to grow while enjoying entertainment. I’ve had multiple fits and starts that I wish I didn’t but am glad I experienced. One of those was what I already mentioned with getting rid of all the entertainment in my life. It made me a dull man. I felt like there was something missing. There was. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a good movie, television show, or listening to a great song. Just don’t let it become all-consuming.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I run a successful blog that helps leaders improve. JMLalonde.com has been in business for over 12 years. During those years, we’ve reached over 1,000,000 readers and created content that has touched lives. We also do business consulting, leadership coaching, and have written multiple books including Reel Leadership, Leadership Lessons From Rambo, and Leadership Lessons From John Wick. Our unique take on movies and the lessons they can teach is what I’m most proud of.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I want to remind your readers to keep moving forward. In your desire to get better, don’t forget to take care of yourself emotionally, physically, and mentally. You have to take time out to make sure you’re feeding yourself.
