Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenzie K.
Hi Kenzie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to share how you got started.
For me, my career started at 18 years old. I was going to college on a scholarship to get my broadcasting degree, while waitressing full time to pay off what my scholarship didn’t cover and being an intern for The Dave Ryan in the Morning Show at KDWB in Minneapolis, MN. Waking up at 3 am to make it to my internship, to leave and open the bar at noon, and close it up at 10 pm, then spend the rest of my night doing homework. I was immediately dedicated to my future in broadcasting.
My internship led to me helping out on the morning show, board oping nights for IHeartMedia, and my own overnight show on KDWB. I was eager to work and get to the next level of my career! While continuing to Board Op and do my Overnight show on KDWB in Minneapolis, I picked up a full-time TV News Reporter position a few hours away in a city named Mankato. To recap I was now a TV News reporter 9-5, five days a week, I was also driving back and forth to pull overnight shifts a few hours away at KDWB. Another opportunity presented itself in Mankato, their own pop station Hot 96.7 decided to hire me as their night show! This is when the juggling act became a lot! I was working four jobs in two different cities!
During my overnight shifts I started to create a website to compile all my different jobs, so an employer could get a visual example of what I was capable of. I applied to easily over 100 positions when finally, one contacted me back! WiLD 94.1 in Tampa Bay, Florida! I was so excited to be their Midday girl, have one job in one city, and move somewhere warm, it truly was a dream and an answered prayer! I lived in Tampa and hosted my own radio show on WiLD 94.1 for two and a half years, I learned so much, it was an incredible experience, and honestly some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.
However just a few years in is when my phone rang, and I received a call from B96 in Chicago. It’s not often market three calls you about a job! I truly felt like it was God’s path for me. I packed up and headed towards long winters once again to do middays on B96 in Chicago. I know it was God for sure because two days into living in the windy city I met a man who is now my fiancé, and I can assure you a husband was not on my agenda! lol
My growth at B96 was a more difficult path, the pandemic made it so difficult to network and grow my brand in this city, however, the pandemic also pushed my fiancé and I to start a brand together which has grown into something bigger than we ever imagined! My solo career in Chicago includes me being on air 10-3 six days a week for B96, I also do custom shows for Philly, Miami, and Sacramento! My brand with my fiancé “Kenzie and Roman” includes tons of TV, we work with ABC a lot including hosting their New Year’s Eve countdown, as well as my fiancé and I developing our own TV show (along with our agent Steve Mandell) It’s called “The MVP Game” it airs on the Marquee Sports Network and is essentially the newlywed game for sports fans! It’s so much fun having couples compete for Cubs tickets! A lot has happened as I approach nearly 4 years in Chicago, but I promise you it’s just the beginning!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth is not a word often used when working in the broadcasting field, especially as a woman in the field! I’ve uprooted myself several times and moved alone to brand new cities, starting my life from scratch all for the love of the job.
I’ve worked holidays, overnights, commuted long hours to different cities, and have spent a lot of time-fighting for respect. Being not only a woman but a young woman has definitely led to many people thinking they know much more than I do! However, if someone is so young and has made it to where you are, there is probably something they know that you may not! I think the world needs to remember no matter who you are you can still learn something from everyone!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do and what are you known for?
This is a tough one!
I’ve been an on-air radio personality for about 10 years! I started at 18 and am now 27. I’m sure I’m most known for radio.
That being said I’m in the middle of shifting that. I’m incredibly blessed to say I took part in the creation of me and my fiancé’s OWN TV show! (Me, my fiancé Justin Roman, and our agent Steve Mandell created it) In this industry, it’s not often when you host any type of show that you also get to be in charge of it creatively! It truly is my passion to host our TV show “The MVP Game” as well as creatively guide it, cast it, etc.! We are also currently working on the expansion of the show. It’s on Marquee Sports Network, but the growth to other markets is our goal!
Building the “Kenzie and Roman” brand with my fiancé and watching it blossom into working with ABC, creating our own TV show, and so much more on the horizon, is what I’m most proud of. I love working with my future husband, and us being able to share our passion project together is so special!
Any big plans?
The future is all about expansion!!!
Our TV show in other markets and you seeing the “Kenzie and Roman” brand in MANY more places!
